Makita LC1230 12-Inch Metal Chop Saw Reviews:
By Mel D., Best dry-cut saw on the market in this price range.
“This saw is simply excellent and the price is unbelievable.
I use it for all kinds of non-ferrous metal, ABS pipe, even complicated extruded forms like Seiki Screen Systems blinds with the mesh screen attached cut cleanly without ripping the screen out.
First and foremost this dry cut saw comes with a $125 blade. Kudos to Makita for always giving you a decent blade with their tools (sharp, lots of carbide for resharpening many times) that you can also buy again later. Too many mfgrs these days sell you an average factory blade that is only shipped with each saw.
- Powerful motor
- Good ergonomics (handle, pull-out lever for adjusting vise)
- Face of vise is machined flat
- Vertical spring won’t fight you.
- Thick, heavy duty base is aluminum (you’ll appreciate that when you have an accident and the blade deflects into the base)
Areas for improvement:
- Pin lock instead of the chain would be better although I’ve never had the chain detach during transport.
- D-shaped handle would be a little more modern but I’ve never found the pistol grip awkward.
I looked at many saws before deciding upon this one such as Milwaukee 6190-20 (2nd preference), Ridgid 614 (twice as expensive), Porter Cable 1410 (14″), Dewalt 872 (cheap pressed base), Hitachi CD14F (14″ again).
5 out of 5 stars.”

“I have one of these saws at work it is fantastic it cuts quick clean and with out heat. You can grab the metal with your bare hand as you take it out of the vise. The blade last for ever it seems and when you do need to replace it is able to be resharpened. I would rate this as one of best tools I’ve ever purchased.”
By David Wilson, Makita Metal Saw is Nice.
“I am electrical contractor and I have always wanted a metal cutting chop saw, but I could not justify the cost. I always just used a portable bandsaw or sawzall. Well, after doing all my research I bought this saw.
No regrets at all. Like most makita tools its well made and superbly engineered. I use it for cutting larger conduits and unistrut in the field. It is a little heavy and awkward at times but it is a pure pleasure to use.”
By Kirk A. Campana, Great Tool!
“I bought and returned an abrasive cutting saw one month prior to purchasing this unit(the abrasive saw performed poorly). In comparison, the Makita LC1230 cuts 3 x faster, much more accurately, and does not heat or discolor the steel. It is everything I hoped it would be.”
By Scott K. King, Awesome Saw!
“Wow, just wow. I’ve been using a makita chop saw for 4 or 5 years now, along with a Carolina band saw. I sold my band saw to pay for this in hopes all the reviews where right. Used it last night to cut angle, rectangle and tube. It just flat out works. The table is solid, the vise holds nice and tight, which is something I read needs to be done to prolong blade life. I set the degree at 0, and it cuts at 0. I haven’t tried any other angles yet though. It is a little loud, but nothing worse than a chop saw, just a different noise. It does throw little chips everywhere, the chip tray does catch some, but much better than the dust everywhere. Also the material comes off warm, but can easily be handled with bare hands, even right on the cut. Just wish I would have sold the band saw years ago and bought this. I would like another band saw someday, just for the bigger capacity.
I went with the makita because of the table being reviewed much higher and also the blade it comes with is a $100+ blade. The table is a solid, heavy table, the blade life is yet to be determined. If the directions on how to cut are followed I can see it holding up great. I also read where the makita blade has bigger carbide inserts, so it can be sharpened 2 or 3 times.”
By NoOnesBusiness, Why, oh why, oh why did I wait so long to buy this?
“An absolutely and unequivocally excellent product. Over the last year, I have used this on material ranging from (very) mild steel to fairly high-Rockwell alloys in shapes ranging from tube, to angle, to plate with uniformly excellent results. I bought a spare blade at the same time as I bought this saw (along with another, “higher-end” blade); I’ve yet to need to replace the original. Quite a product. Its performance certainly meets all of Makita’s claims.”
By Greg P., Great saw, great blade, good price.
“I have used a couple of cold-cut saws (as well as several abrasive saws) over the years, and this is the best I have used. It is solid without being impossible to move, with almost no blade wander (some run-out existed on both of the other saws I tried – Dewalt and Milwaukee), which, combined with the excellent Makita blade, gives notably smoother and more precise cuts. The miter guage is surprisingly accurate (but if you need finer than 2 degree precision on angles other than 0 and 45, use a good guage like a Starret). After about 6 months and perhaps 3,000 cuts through tubing and channel – much of it 2″, 3/16 thickness steel – the blade is starting to perform less well – leaving a notable burr which was not present previously. However, given that the saw has now probably cut well more than 1,000 linear feet of 1/8 and 3/16 steel, I am very happy with the performance of both the saw and blade.
My only very mild criticisms: the safety lock occasionally sticks and the arm needs to be wiggled a bit to allow the arm to be pulled down. The chip catcher only gets about 50% of the steel shavings that are created (hey, that is much better than catching none) – it is good to have a magnet around to gather them up later. Finally, as others have noted, the chain that holds the arm down for transport is less convenient than the pins that are common on many miter saws. None of these issues reduces my overall affection for the saw.
In summary, great saw, great blade, good price.”
